Sometimes beauty isn’t pretty. Sometimes it’s just a big ol’ fail…
How many times did you watch that gif? I watched that loop 10 times in a row and it’s funny every single time. I just love that the male model behind her doesn’t even flinch! I’m not sure if he’s a total a-hole for not helping her or a total pro that he could keep going without busting out laughing.
But what I really mean by beauty fails is when you spend money on a beauty product and it turns out to be terrible. It sucks but it’s bound to happen.
I was SOOO disappointed by this one. I LOVE the Loreal Voluminous mascara. I have used it for years and think it’s the best drugstore mascara on the market. However, I often like to use waterproof mascara because it holds curl better in my stick straight lashes. Of course, I turned to the waterproof version of my favourite mascara. But it’s just bad, bad, bad. Not only does it not help with holding a curl at all, I would barely call it waterproof. If I’ve been at the gym with this stuff on my whole lid is covered in mascara that’s transferred and that’s even without being crazy sweaty. I also find it smudges during the day all underneath my eyes. No one wants to look like a racoon!
I just bought this lipstick in my most recent beauty haul. Now when I call this one a fail, I’ll say it’s a fail for ME. I bought this off the recommendation of a lot of beauty bloggers who love it. And I think a lot of people would love this lipstick. It’s a really pretty sheer coral colour. The reason it’s a fail for me is I didn’t get a good enough colour pay off. When I wear lipstick, I want to be able to see it. So I returned this lipstick for a much more vibrant coral shade, Vegas Volt.
This cream is like a half-fail for me. I like the way the curl cream works. I have naturally wavy hair and this cream works well to give me some good definition without being frizzy. However, it’s awful after you shower. When I showered and then blow-dried my hair, my hair felt nasty like I forgot to rinse out my conditioner.
This lip gloss is horrible. It is seriously the stickiest lip gloss ever. If a drugstore lipgloss that cost me $5 is sticky, I’m okay with that. But this lip gloss is $29 so stickiness is not okay! And there is nothing special about this lip gloss otherwise that would make it worth the stickiness. An utter fail by a company that usually has such great products.
A little while ago I needed new shampoo. I decided to venture out and try this new sulfate free shampoo from Joico. I have no idea what sulfate does to your hair but I figured sulfate-free sounded like a good idea. It was not. After using this shampoo I dried my hair and it felt disgusting and it looked greasy. So greasy that I would have to put dry shampoo in and put it in a ponytail. Right after showering! Of course, I tried it a couple times to see if maybe it was something else but the same thing every single time. And when I went to my hairdresser, he found a bunch of build up on my hair. Of course I bought the huge mega size bottle when I got this shampoo, because it’s cheaper in bulk! Huge waste.
So there ya have it a few of my most recent beauty fails. The funny thing about beauty though is that it’s in the eye of the beholder. So while one product might be a total fail for me, it might be a holy grail product for you. We’re all different and have different needs so if I post something that you love, don’t worry, it just didn’t work out for me.
What are some beauty fails you have had recently? How many times did you watch that gif?
When heading to Vegas last week I had one goal…makeup shopping.
Makeup, like so many things, is cheaper in the U.S compared to Canada. Some brands have quite a discrepancy on prices, up to $12 whereas some others is very limited, $1-2 dollars difference. So I made sure I did my research ahead of time to figure out which items I wanted to purchase while in the US.
I ended up making 3 makeup stops – MAC, Sephora and Ulta. I went to Ulta in Phoenix. We don’t have Ulta’s in Canada but I hear about that store from all the beauty gurus. So when we drove by one on my birthday, I basically stop, dropped and rolled out of my Dad’s truck to get there.
So now what did I get? Just a couple of things…
I got some real basic items that I needed but were cheaper in the US such as MAC studio finish concealer and MAC full coverage foundation. I love the MAC studio finish concealer for blemish coverups. It has an amazing formula that will cover ANYTHING! And one of those pots will last a very long time. Last time I was in Vegas I bought the MAC full coverage foundation. It’s a pro product so it can only be bought at a pro store or online. I like a full coverage foundation because I have lots of skin issues. But the great thing about a cream foundation like this one is that you can sheer it out to whatever coverage that you like.
I also picked up Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion & All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. These are both amazing products that I have owned before but needed more of. The primer potion is an eyeshadow base that will help your eyeshadow stay and not crease all day. I used to use MAC’s paint pot in the colour Painterly as my eyeshadow base but I now prefer the primer potion because it doesn’t have any colour in it so the eyeshadows apply true to their colour. The all nighter setting spray is amazing for setting your makeup. My makeup really does last longer when I use this product. And I always, always use this when I am doing makeup for weddings.
I picked up a new Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in the colour medium ash for filling in my eyebrows. I used to use MAC’s eyebrow pencil and loved it. But once I tried Anastasia’s Brow Wiz, I’ll never go back. This product is amazing for filling in eyebrows. It has a really smooth consistency that glides on easily and a fine tip that allows you to get a perfect edge. I also love that it comes with a spoolie brush for brushing out the product.
I also picked up a new liquid eyeliner pen. I have been a pretty faithful user of gel eyeliner but liquid liner is better for getting a winged liner so I decided to try out a new product. I have heard good things about the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner so I picked that up in Jet Black.
I got two new blushes. I got a new Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush. I was pretty set on buying Radiant Magenta but when I got to Sephora and re-swatched the blushes, I fell in love with Mood Exposure which is a soft plum colour. I don’t have any blush like that so I felt it was a better buy. When I was at Ulta I picked up a NYX blush. I have heard really good things about NYX’s blushes. I chose the colour Peach, although to me, it’s not peach coloured at all but a bright pink.
If you read my blog, you know that I love Illamasqua blushes and was super excited to go to Vegas so that I could buy some new blushes. However, they no longer carry the brand at that Sephora, it’s only carried at very limited locations. 😦 You can buy them online but I was really hoping to swatch them in store because buying online is always difficult to tell true colours. When I told the guy who worked at Sephora my dilemma, he told me I should just buy all the colours because they are all fabulous. I agreed, however I doubt Tom would…
For eyeshadows, I finally bit the bullet and bought an Urban Decay Naked palette. I went for the newest palette, 3, which is the rose gold tone shadows. I didn’t swatch the shadows because there are about a million swatches on the internet and reviews of the palette. From MAC I bought two new purple eyeshadows. It was pretty random, neither of these were on my “to buy” list, however I just fell in love with them in the store. I bought Stars n Rockets which is a pretty iridescent purple and Vibrant Grape, which is exactly what you would expect, a vibrant purple colour.
For lips, I got three new products. I bought two lipsticks – MAC Creemsheen lipstick in Fanfare & Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color in Bikini Pink. I bought one gloss, NYX Pink Frost. So far, I have only tried out the Bobbi Brown Bikini Pink, which I love, love, love! It’s such a beautiful light pink colour that I think would flatter so many people.
Lastly, I bought one Ulta brush, a small shader. It was on sale at Ulta for $5 and I’ve wanted a new shader brush. I am really impressed with the brush especially considering the price. I also got a NYX Jumbo Pencil in Black Bean. It’s great for creating a smokey eye.
So I think it’s safe to say I won’t be makeup shopping for a little while now. But I’m really happy with everything that I bought so far and can’t wait to try the products that I haven’t tried out yet!
On Thursday, I am headed out on vacation again! What? Didn’t I just come back from Cancun? Well, yes I did. 🙂
This time Tom and I are headed with two other couples to Las Vegas! And then after the weekend, Tom and I are continuing on to Phoenix to spend a couple of days visiting my Dad who is a snowbird and lives there for a few months in the winter.
What does this have to do with my beauty haul? Well, I definitely plan on a big beauty haul when I go to the US because the prices are cheaper! I am not a gambler so I told Tom that I get equal amount to spend on makeup that he uses on gambling…fair right? Lately I’ve been holding off on my makeup purchases until I go there but when I was at the mall this week picking up a few things I just suddenly found myself in Sephora and then I walked by MAC and well…here’s the haul.
From Sephora I only bought one thing! I got the new Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush. When I saw that these blushes came out I knew I wanted one and then after seeing Tiffany D’s rave on them, I was definitely sold. I already love the Hourglass ambient lighting powder. I only currently have one colour, luminous light, but I love it. If I had more money, I’m sure I would own more of them but they are quite pricey.
There are six blushes in the collection, when it came time to pick out a shade I literally stood in front of those blushes for a solid 20 minutes swatching and re-swatching. I had the hardest time deciding which colour to choose because I love them all! The one I ultimately decided on was luminous flush. It’s a gorgeous pinky-coral colour. It is marbled with the luminous light powder so my powder & blush go together flawlessly.
When you swatch these blushes they look like they might go on pretty sheer but they have some serious pigment. When I put it on this morning, I went a little overboard and had to buff it out pretty vigorously before I could leave the house. I think I’ll definitely be adding a second shade to my US shopping list…
When I got to the till at Sephora I also received my free birthday gift! I totally forgot about this so it was a nice little bonus. The birthday gift this year is by Makeup Forever, you receive a mini lipstick in the shade Rouge Artist Natural, a mini aqua eyes eyeliner in black and a mini smoky extravagant mascara.
I’ve tried the eyeliner and the mascara so far. The eyeliner is great. It really stays on for a long time without smudging. The mascara, I wouldn’t say I’m the hugest fan of. I find you really have to work to build it up and like so many non-waterproof mascaras, it doesn’t hold a curl in my lash. So for me, I won’t be purchasing a full size.
I haven’t tried out the lipstick really yet so I can’t talk about the staying power yet. The shade they gave is a brownish red shade. It’s a good neutral colour that will look good on a variety of people. I can’t say it’s a shade I would normally pick out for myself but I’m interested to give it a try.
When I went to MAC I was looking for a cream blush that I could apply underneath the new hourglass blush that I just bought. I often like to layer a cream blush and powder blush for extra staying power. I ended up buying Something Special, a light coral blush.
However, after I got home I took another look at it and realized I already own a cream Bobbi Brown brush that is a great dupe for this blush. It didn’t seem worth it to me to have both. So thanks to MACs great return policy I returned it the next day and got a pink blush, So Sweet, So Easy instead.
I also bought a new pro long wear eyeshadow. I did my friend’s makeup trail for her upcoming wedding the other day and felt I didn’t quite have the right shade in my current collection for what she wanted. I was looking for a light almost white colour with a touch of gold undertones. Well I found that colour, it’s called Carefree.
Then I bought two new lipsticks, well I actually only bought one because I got one for free for returning 6 empty containers. I was looking for a great pink – not super vibrant but not nude colour either. I ended up choosing Speed Dial. I also fell in love with Snapdragon, which is part of the Fantasy of Flowers collection. I knew it’s limited edition so I decided to grab it at the same time.
Sorry I don’t have a swatch of the lipsticks individually because I just realized they are in my purse….which I forgot at work. Ugh. But I do have a picture of myself wearing the two of them mixed together yesterday.
That’s it for now….I will definitely post my next beauty haul when I return from the states!
Have you tried out the new Ambient Lighting Blushes? Any recent beauty purchases that you are psyched about?
Valentines Day is next week! Do you know what you’re doing? I do! Watching two amazing people get married, how romantic!
If you’re planning on going out for a valentines date, it’s time to start thinking about your date night look. Valentines day looks can go two ways -sweet or sexy. I decided to go sweet with a soft pink & purple eye and light pink cheeks & lips.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
Loreal True Match Lumi Foundation in Warm III
MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NC30
Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Sand
MAC Skinfinish Natural in Medium Plus
MAC powder blush in Style
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Luminous Light (Cheek Highlight)
I used Tarte’s Maracuja Divine Shine Lipgloss, but any light pink gloss would work
What are your valentines plans? Do you prefer sweet or sexy makeup for valentines day?
So in case you live under a rock and didn’t know this, the Grammy’s were last night. I watched them kind of in the background while I caught up on my emails and everything else I missed while I was away. The Grammy’s really are an interesting awards show, it’s basically just a concert of multiple different singers with a few…very few awards thrown in for good measure.
Of course, I was most interested in the fashion & beauty of the celebrities. So I’ll recap some of my favourite looks.
Shiny metallics were definitely the theme at the Grammy’s this year for dresses.
My favourite dress of the night was hands down Chrissy Teigen’s. She absolutely rocked that dress!
Another look I loved was Taylor Swift. Sticking with her typical colour range, she went with a gold and silver dress. It fit her beautifully and was very classic looking.
I also loved Anna Kendrick’s dress and whole look really. And I love her! She is so funny.
As for beauty looks I have a couple of favourites.
I thought Sarah Hyland looked really cute with her cherry red lips and rosy cheeks.
Again, I’ll give an honourable mention to Taylor Swift. She always has great makeup at awards show and her smokey grey eye was no exception. I thought her choice of ponytail was really interesting, I preferred when she put her hair down for her performance. Although, that led to her incessant head banging…ugh!!!
I thought Katy Perry looked flawless with her bronzed face, shimmery copper eye and bubble gum pink lips. Very refined and sophisticated.
And my favourite beauty look of the night was Rita Ora. I loved her choice of bold purple eye and pink lips! So different for the red carpet.
What were your favourite looks of the Grammy’s? Any you want me to recreate?
I have a lot of makeup. A-LOT of makeup…
However, even with tons of makeup I still find a few key items that I always reach for. So I thought I would compile my list of Makeup Must Haves:
1. Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer
I LOVE this primer. I love the way it feels, it just glides on your face. You only need to use the tiniest amount to cover your whole face and it makes your foundation last all day! I’ve had a bottle of this stuff for well over a year and it’s still practically full! A solid investment for sure.
This powder changed my life. I used to be someone who could never leave the house without foundation. However, once I tried this powder that changed. I can just put on a little concealer, buff this powder on and my skin looks flawless! The days I want fuller coverage I will wear foundation but use this as my setting powder. It goes over top of foundation beautifully without looking cakey.
I also use a darker shade for contouring. I love it because you don’t have to worry about a bronzer which can be too orange, too muddy coloured, too shimmery, etc. This gives you a very natural looking contour.
3. MAC 217 Brush:
This is the holy grail of eyeshadow brushes. If you do not currently own this brush, head straight to MAC. Do not even finish reading this post. Seriously, you’ll thank me later. The biggest trick to applying eyeshadow is BLENDING! This brush will take any hack makeup job and blend it into a masterpiece.
4. Illamasqua Blush in Lover
The blush is a perfect peach colour. It’s highly pigmented, goes on beautifully and lasts for hours. It is always my go to blush and the one blush I’ll pack when I’m going somewhere for a weekend. Never heard of Illamasqua? Don’t feel bad, it’s hard to find! I bought this blush when I was in Las Vegas last year. There aren’t any Canadian stores that I can find that carry it and only select US Sephora’s carry it. Which is a shame because this blush is amazing!! However, you can order it from Sephora online. The next time I’m in Vegas (February) I am definitely checking out some more of the colours in person and bringing home
a few every single colour.
5. MAC’s Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe
In my opinion, there is no beating MAC’s eye shadows. The pigments, the colour selection, the colour payoff, and blending ability are second to none. My favourite colour of all time is definitely satin taupe. This is a gorgeous shimmery taupe shade. This eyeshadow looks good on everyone. It is always my go-to colour when I’m in a rush and need my standard look. Paired with MAC’s Vex is my favourite combo of all time!
6. Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer & Treatment in Brightener
The name of this product is a mouthful but it has been a game changer for me. I have very bad hereditary dark under eye circles. I think I have tried pretty well every single concealer on the market and was so frustrated until I found this product. The difference this stuff makes is remarkable and it’s drug store brand! I love that. This is a brightener so its very light and pink coloured. I put this onto the darkest parts of my under eye and then put concealer over top to match my skin tone.
7. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray
After you spend time doing your makeup, you want it to last. This product will make that happen! I notice a huge difference on days I set my makeup and days that I do not. There are lots of setting sprays on the market but this one has a cult following and for a reason, it works!
What are your makeup must haves? Do you use any of these products?
